South African health health ministers (SADC) responsible for HIV and AIDS will meet this week in Windhoek to review public health issues aimed at contributing to an improved quality of life for people in the region.
The SADC Secretariat at Vindhoek said in a statement that ministers are expected to provide collective oversight of the implementation of a regional health agenda based on the USC Health Protocol, the Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan and the SADC Health Policy.
The meeting will also consider progress in implementing the 2030 Sustainable Development Program, which includes 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) adopted by world leaders in September 2015.
The Secretariat said, inter alia, that the following will be discussed: the emergence and re-emergence of zoonotic diseases, in particular the eruption of Ebola in May 2018 in the Ecuator Province; the elimination of smallpox; control and elimination of malaria through continuous efforts to establish; complete the epidemic of tuberculosis (TB) and update progress on HIV and AIDS.
Meanwhile, SADC senior officials will participate in marking the SADC Malaria Day to be held in the village of Kaiengona, the Eastern Region of Kavango.
According to the statement, SADC's malaria day will highlight the state of malaria among vulnerable communities and advocate the support of key decision makers and stakeholders for efforts to control malaria in the region.
The SADC malaria issue will be "Permanent cross-border co-operation is the key to eliminating malaria," and the slogan is "SADC Unite to End Malaria".
