A cheap solar barrier could reduce global warming

London: Spraying chemicals sunk high above the Earth to slow global warming could be "extremely cheap", cost about $ 3.1 billion a year for 15 years, according to a study by US scientists.

A new way to slow down climate change? Block the sun.

Some researchers say that a geoengineering technique known as stratospheric aerosol injection (SAI) can limit the rising temperatures caused by climate change.

Still unclear and hypothetical, this would involve the use of huge hoses, guns or specially designed planes to spray large quantities of sulphate particles into the upper atmosphere to act as a reflective barrier against sunlight.

The total cost of starting the hypothetical effort of the SAI of 15 years will be $ 8.8 billion, according to researchers at Harvard University in a report published in the journal Letters of Environment, adding that the average annual operating costs would be around $ 3.1 billion per year for 15 years.
