Big noses helped some dinosaurs stay cool

Large screened dinosaurs were cooled using the air conditioning system built into the nose, scientists found.

It is thought to be sharply arched, ankylosaurs from the club, stopped from overheating in the Kredi Sun using their long and curved nasal passages.

They acted as radiators, transmitting heat from the body in the inhaled air and cooling blood on the path to the brain.

Ruger Porter, one of the co-authors of the study, said: "When we reconstructed blood vessels, based on bone channels and channels, we found rich blood supply that takes place right next to these cramped nasal passages.

"The hot blood from the body's core would go through these blood vessels and transfer heat to the incoming air.

"At the same time, the evaporation of moisture in the long nasal channels cooled venous blood that was intended for the brain."

Researchers from Ohio University and the College of Osteopathic Medicine in New York have published their findings in PLOS ONE.

They used CT scanning and engineering to simulate how the air moves through the nasal passages of two different types of ankylosaurus, Panoplosaurus sizes of hyperposition, and larger Euoplocephalus with large carriers.

Ankylosaurs were good for keeping the heat, but they tried to pass it, making them a risk of overheating even during cloudy days.

The results "clearly demonstrated" that the length of the nose was crucial for their ability to air conditioning, with heat transfer rates dropping more than 50 percent when a shorter nose model was tested.

This natural engineering venture "may have allowed the evolution of large sizes so much of that dinosaur," they believe.

The most complex noses are found in larger types of dinosaurs, suggesting that they developed in response to "physiological efforts of large body size".
