Discover how to eliminate HIV cells

[ad_1]

A team from the Pasteur Institute managed to identify the vulnerability in cells called "deposits" of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which causes AIDS, which opens the way to eliminating the virus, published today specialized publications. According to medical sources, so far antiretroviral drugs block a virus that causes AIDS and work against the virus and its multiplication, but can not eliminate infected cells.

"Now, with our work, it's about characterizing infected cells to be able to point to cells and eliminate them from an HIV-infected organism," said study chief, Spaniard Asier Saez-Cirion.

According to sources, the work represents a step towards possible recovery of patients due to the elimination of cells that act as a deposit, also called reservoirs or "latent virus". This discovery would involve knowledge of a formula that would eliminate the AIDS virus that so far could only slow down its progress.

The discovery was made by French researchers co-ordinated by a Spanish scientist who succeeded in blocking HIV activity with inhibitors, in addition to discovering how to eliminate viruses infected with cells. But at this point, the method will not yet be applied in patients, explained the study published in the journal Cell Metabolism.
