What is the lymph obstruction that Florencia Kirchner suffers?

Lymph obstruction is the blockage of lymph vessels that drain fluid from the tissues throughout the body and allow the immune system cells to travel where needed. Lymph obstruction can cause lymphoedema, which means inflammation due to blockage of the lymphatic channels. The main symptom is permanent (chronic) swelling, usually a hand or foot.

In the meantime, the most common cause of lymph obstruction is the elimination or inflammation of the lymph nodes. Although it may also be caused by parasitic infections such as filariasis, injuries, radiotherapy, skin infections such as cellulitis (more common in obese patients), surgery or tumors.

It should be noted that in Western societies one of the most common causes of lymphedema is the removal of breast (mastectomy) and lymph tissue below the arm of breast cancer. This causes lymphademia in 10 to 15% of patients, as lymph drainage of the arm passes through the axillary.

Treatment for lymphademia involves compression (usually by wrapping the curve), manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), and range of movement or resistance exercise. In the meantime, manual lymphatic drainage is a therapeutic technique of mild massage, during which the skin moves in certain directions based on the structure of the lymphatic system. This helps to lymph fluid flow through the appropriate channels.

Skin care is also important for the prevention of injuries, infections and skin breakdown, and can be prescribed programs of movement or light exercise. The use of compression clothing in the affected area or pneumatic compression pump can help. In some cases, the operation is used, but its effectiveness is limited. The surgeon must have a lot of experience with this type of procedure.

Among the types of operations that can be performed are liposuction, removal of abnormal lymph tissue and transplantation of normal lymphatic tissue into areas with abnormal lymphatic drainage (rarely). In the meantime, surgery is rarely performed to make derivatives of abnormal lymphatic tissue through venous grafts. These procedures are more effective in people with initial lymphedema and should be performed by a highly experienced surgeon.
