Steir. The carmaker BMV and its largest engine factory in Steyr are working on preparing for the future with several models of drives.

The key is "flexibility in all directions," says Steir's director, Christoph Schroder. During assembly, petrol, diesel, rear, front and all-wheel drive units must be manufactured on a single line using a modular system.

Electric motors continue to be installed exclusively in Dingolfing. However, by machining the chassis for electric motors in mechanical production in Steir, the plant gets at least one leg in this door. The first cases will be delivered in March. In 2021, 460,000 units will be processed annually. Investment volume: 58 million euros.

In Steir, the new drive line will be put into operation in the second half of the year. This will be the latest generation of gasoline engines with four and six cylinders. There will be 260 employees. Investment point: 74 million euros.

Further investments in the development of diesel continue: "We are working on the next generation of diesel engines, which will begin in 2020," reports the head of the plant. The new "complex components of an electric motor" are being built in the development center, Schroeder said. Cooling circuits for Stromer would also have been developed and tested in Steir.

With these activities, Schroder wants to destroy the impression that the plant in Steir has no future. So, he is trying to put a layer on the only clean diesel engine to relativize: "We make the same number of units, but we can do this in a full operation in two shifts better than in the poorly used three shifts."

Highest employment

Therefore, the reduction in the number of jobs only led to a reduction in the number of temporary workers in the "two-digit range". "It's less than two percent of the workforce." Schroeder points out that over the past two years, 750 jobs have been created. With 3610 employees and employees, the basic workforce is at the highest level (plus 4.6%). In addition, at the end of 2018, there will be 1035 leasing power (minus three percent annually).

The engine drive and remains an important part of the BMV network, Schroder coordinates with those who in the long run call into question the future of the plant and the development center for diesel fuel. "I see a factory in five years with a production scale similar to the current one." As in the previous year, some 300 million euros will be invested in the construction site.

The turnover of the factory in 2018 amounted to 3.6 billion euros, a decrease of five percent. Production volume of 1.2 million units is down by eight percent compared to 2017.

As Magna builds the BMV series 5 and Z4 in Graz, BMV sees itself as "the largest carmaker in Austria". In the year 2018, 64,000 pieces were recorded in Graz. BMV thus secured more than 10,000 jobs, according to an annual media interview. 6.6 billion euros makes BMV sales to companies in Austria, which is six percent less than last year. The sales company in Salzburg recorded a 10 percent drop in sales to 1.7 billion euros.
