According to the specialized site Down Detector, the problems started to appear shortly after 18:00 GMT on Instagram, and to a lesser extent on Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp.
However, the situation seemed to be being resolved two hours later, with the number of people reporting incidents at the Down Detector site falling sharply.
A Facebook spokesman confirmed to AFP around 9:20 p.m. GMT that the problem had been resolved and services fully restored.
“We sincerely apologize to all those who have not been able to access our products in the last few hours,” he said in an e-mail. “We have solved the problem and now everything should return to normal,” he added.
The outages occurred due to a configuration change and affected users around the world.
However, that has nothing to do with what happened on Monday, Facebook said.
All of the company’s services, from WhatsApp to Instagram, Messenger and Oculus, remained unavailable for nearly seven hours, preventing billions of users from viewing their messages and news.
The interruption, Facebook explained the next day, was caused by a group error during a routine operation on the protocol to create a sustainable path between the computer and the website.
Social networks regularly face failures of varying duration; According to the editor of the ToolTester website, the Instagram app alone has seen more than 80 in the United States in the last year.
