If WhatsApp allows communication via end-to-end encryption to route your messages and store them on your smartphone, the app has so far not allowed it to provide such security for backups of your conversations in the cloud.

So today you can go to the WhatsApp security settings on your smartphone to activate end-to-end encryption of your backups.
The application will offer you to protect your own backup using a password or using a 64-bit encryption key that only you know.
Once security is established, neither WhatsApp nor the storage service that backs up your conversations will be able to see the contents of your messages.
Since the option is still offered to approximately two billion users that WhatsApp is counting on, you may still need to wait before it becomes visible in your app’s settings.
