Real Sociedad grabbed the King’s Cup for 2020 – World of Football – Spain

Real Sociedad is the new winner of the Royal Cup after a 1-0 victory over Atletico Bilbao in the final. A precious goal was scored by Mikel Ojarsabal from the penalty spot in the 63rd minute.

This match was supposed to take place last season, but the conflict for the trophy was postponed several times due to the coronavirus pandemic. The great Basque rivals for the first time faced a direct dispute over the valuable prize, which is the third on the window of the team from San Sebastian.

The match started with a more active game of Sociedad and in the 6th minute David Silva sent a shot, which was blocked. The team from Bilbao responded with a shot by Raul Garcia, but the ball did not find the goal. In the 18th minute, Alvarez missed the ball in the cross from the right side, and only the timely intervention of Martinez kept the door of Atletico dry.

Alexander Isak’s great individual penetration in the 22nd minute caused turmoil in Bilbao’s defense and miraculously the ball did not end up in Unai Simon’s goal. Iker Munianin showed class in the 29th minute, but missed a moment to pass and defender Sociedad cleared. He could have scored again two minutes later, but after a ricochet, the ball went into the corner.

The best opportunity so far was in the 32nd minute, when goalkeeper Unai Simon found Inigo Martinez in front of the Sociedad penalty area with a long pass. A defender managed to keep the ball from crossing the goal-line after a curling shot coming in from the right from Jürgen Schneider after 80 minutes, and the ball went wide.

In the first minute of the second half after a cross from the left, the ball hit Bilbao defender Inigo Martinez on the edge of the penalty area. After checking the situation with VAR, referee Estrada Fernandez ruled a foul, because according to the video replays, the illegal game was not within the penalty area.

In the 58th minute, the grandmaster’s dog, Mikel Merino, found the unprepared Bilbao defender Inigo Martinez with the fast-paced Cristiano Porto, who knocked down the Sociedad striker. Referee Estrada Fernandez pointed to the white dot and kicked out the defender. After the intervention of the VAR, the red card was replaced with a yellow one, but the decision on the penalty was not changed. Nearly 5 minutes into the game, Mikel Ojarsabal received a penalty kick in the 63rd minute.

The goal poured lead into Bilbao’s players and they did not manage to endanger the opponent’s goal for a long time. Only in the given 8-minute overtime, they reached several shots, which did not bother the goalkeeper Alex Remir.

Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino was chosen as the most useful player in the final.
