SANTA MONICA, CA – Lexus was always a bit ahead of the curve. His first RX SUV, introduced since the time Jean Chretien was still prime minister, then looked unexpected. Lekus was crazy about building such a crazy form, I thought then. But I remember thinking, at about the same time, that the predictions that everyone would one day walk with the phone in their pockets would sound like madness. And yet we are here.
Lekus was also ahead of the game when they decided that the quality and marker experience would mark the brand. No, the Lexus models were not always foolish like BMV or Audis, but they certainly did not cost that much maintenance, consistently taking away the "most reliable" and "most reliable" awards. In recent years, after adopting a philosophy of design that had more angles and lines than map constellations, Lexus cars and SUVs looked almost too futuristic, as if the brand was too busy. Only recently, this same design philosophy seemed appropriate for our time.
But because the current, fourth-generation RKS 350 and 450h are in production since 2015, and because competition in this category is fierce, Lexus refreshes its most popular vehicle (also in triple, RKS L trim) for the 2020 model year. A flying look does not reveal that the front and rear facades are new, or to wear new 18-inch or 20-inch wheels. LED lights with triple beam are slimmed, and come standard starting from the luxury class. The fog lights are moved lower and more rational. Inside, an eight-inch touch screen or an optional 12.3-inch device surrounds the center console, paired with a remote touchpad located in the place where your right hand naturally leans. The multimedia system now includes Apple CarPlai and Android Auto – finally – with six USB ports for devices.
These slimmer headlights certainly emphasize the angry, tilted look of the RKS without being strangely eccentric, and they work well with the sands of the brand's sandblast to refresh the front of the RKS smartly. The back lights use the "L" motif across the top of the lamp, which is reflected by the reversed Ls over the bottom. The rear bonnet of the engine that can be activated using the impact sensor is now available on the Extra Package. All in all, this is a big advance in relation to what has already been an attractive vehicle.
A ride, which has never been undesirable, should also have improvements. The front and rear stabilizer bars are now hollow to reduce weight, and thicker diameters and reinforced plugs will, according to Lekus, help reduce the body turn and improve the steering response. The shock absorbers are adapted to work with rigid rods, while the upgraded shock absorbers are equipped with a new friction control device that helps control high-frequency vibrations for easier driving. In order to prevent subcontracting which occurs during a swift cornering, "active braking in the bend" bounces the inner rear tire to keep the RKS in the sail near the road. For another 50 dot welded joints and adhesives, stiffness is improved.
The engines and gears remain the same – eight-speed automatic and 3.5-liter V6 (295 hp; 268 lb.-ft) in 350, and a 3.5-liter V6 with an electric motor in hybrid for 308 horsepower and 247 lb.ft.
Security, of course, also made a gain, and most of the standards. Just like GM's OnStar, Enform Safeti Connect gives access to a live human body 24/7 that can help in an accident or emergency. The pre-collision system has been improved so that it can now be aware that cyclists are in daytime – instead of just cars and pedestrians – in front of the vehicle. By increasing the sensitivity of the camera and the dynamic range, it is better to see the pedestrian in low light conditions. The system even has the ability to detect tags on the tape to help position the tape; and if the labels are weak or do not exist, the RKS will follow the vehicle in front of it when working with the CRC by radar cruise control. All this is standard.
The new exterior color, Moonbeam Beige Metallic, joins the new interior, Birch. The new RKS F Sport package lends a variant suspension system from Lekus LC that is more sensitive than the previous systems. F Sport packages include cold suction air, aluminum pedals, a sport steering wheel with a heated steering wheel and an attractive red leather interior with sports seats.
2020 RKS and RKS L will begin production at the Tootie Plant in Cambridge in the third quarter of 2019. The price will be announced closer to the date of sale, but should not be far from the current starting price of $ 55,000.
