HALIFAX – The RCMP says someone hacking social media accounts belonging to Nova Scotia girls and demanding provocative photos and videos.
Mounties say they received complaints about girls in the Annapolis Valley this week, but extortion offers are also taking place in other parts of the province.
They say hackers have access to a girls account and require provocative photos or videos or sign-in information for friends' accounts in order to regain control of their accounts.
Hackers also threatened to send explicit content from the account if they did not comply.
The RCMP asks anyone who is hit by such a fraud to contact the police.
Investigators also encourage parents and carers to talk to their children about what they share through the Internet, potential risks and how they can be protected.
"Please, know that our investigators value what may be unpleasant, but do not let that stop you from contacting us," RCMP Cpl. Jennifer Clarke said on Thursday.
"We need this information to identify those who are responsible for stopping it."
