SIDNEI, N. S. – Businessman Anthony Marlow says he is dedicated to the employees of more than 500 former employees of ServiCom Canada Ltd. to return to work two weeks after their employer suddenly stopped working, leaving them all unemployed.

Marlow arrived on Wednesday night and spent his evening on that evening and on Thursday a senior management meeting at a closed call center in Sydney.

He was happy with the applause on Thursday night at a staff meeting at the Ashby Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.

"We will immediately offer a job to anyone who has worked here since the date of bankruptcy and, frankly, any reasonable time before that," said Marlow, 39 years old.

"We want and need to get everything back. Workers were the most important component for our consideration, our acquisition and long-term investment in Cape Breton."

In an interview interviewed by Cape Breton Post, Marlow spoke in detail about the process that was supposed to come to this moment and how much he was doing for a new job, now called Sidnei Call Center Inc. It is a subsidiary of MCI Canada.

The Post first identified Marloua as a potential buyer last week and on Tuesday at an auction involving his company MCI Canada and two more bidders, the winner was awarded a contract to pay $ 1.5 million for four ServiCom services – GM OnStar, Sirius KSM satellite radio, AT & T and Allstate.

Sidnei Call Center Inc. will not assume any responsibility for the obligations of ServiCom, including employee benefits. Some staff members have three to four weeks of payment thanks to them.

As an incentive to recruit former employees, MCI Canada offers rewards and subscription applications.

Although Marlow said he had an idea about the size of the budget needed for bonuses, it is necessary to talk to a senior management team at the call center.

He estimated that 80 to 90 percent of the former workforce of ServiCom will return to their jobs.

"It's not only important that people return, they are returning on a long-term basis, not only to raise the registration bonus and to go on. It would be harmful for us, the clients and the community and what we are trying to do here."

MCI Canada will also seek new, incoming call center clients for "customer-oriented services or digital processes," which involves interacting with clients via messaging via the Internet.

The long-term lease decision at the Sydney Trade Center signaled that the new company wants to quench its roots in that area, said George Karaphillis, Dean of the Shannon School of Business at Cape Breton University.

MCI Canada has completed a nine-year lease with the landlord Crombie REIT.

"I'm surprised that this guy signed a lease for nine years. That's a very good sign," Karaphilis said.

"They have a history … and they have done well, and if they have no history, they would not do it. If it was a completely new operation, there is no way to lease it for nine years."

ServiCom was originally opened as Ron Veber and Associates Inc. in the Sydney River in 1999. The call center moved to its current location at the end of 2016.

Karaphilis said that the exchange rate helped US business interests in the region.

The Canadian dollar currently sits under 75 cents of the United States, which is a "big boost" for US companies operating here, he said.

"In such situations where most American buyers are, if you have a good course, it's an extra wind in your sails."

Sydney will be the ninth call center by Marlow, which increases the workforce to around 2,500.
