Arrhythmia is the cause of sudden death in older adults and athletes

Arrhythmia, a condition characterized by a variation in heart rate rhythm, is one of the causes of sudden death in older adults and athletes such as footballers, a specialist warned.

The reason for this, Dr. Bazcar Rodriguez in the statement said that in the case of the elderly "as the age progresses, the heart registers the process of growth, causing heart failure".

While in footballers, due to the efforts required in their hearts, they can "disappear and die in a frenzied manner during the game," said a doctor assigned to the Cardiology Hospital of the General Hospital of Mexico, Dr Eduardo Liceaga.

The specialist explained that the normal heart rate in a person is 60 to 100 beats per minute.

However, there are cases where the incidence is less than 60, which is called bradycardia or greater than 100, a situation known as tachycardia.

Both conditions, he said, are the effects on the electrical system of the heart caused by chronic degenerative diseases such as arterial hypertension.

The specialist noted that changes in heart palpitations can occur at any age, although in the children's population, this is usually due to inborn malformations that can in some cases be corrected by surgery.

Bazan Rodriguez recalled that there is currently a wide range of drugs that effectively mitigate this condition.

However, he recommended that people with chronic degenerative illness such as diabetes or renal failure have adequate control to avoid any condition.

Similarly, he proposed electrophysiological studies, since they can observe the heart reaction to controlled electrical signals, allowing them to determine the origin and solve the problem by avoiding open-heart surgery.
