Former deputy head of the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) Iared Zerihun was arrested early today after the Ethiopian government intensified the hunt for what it calls criminals involved in the misappropriation of public funds and human rights violations.
Jared was arrested at the Koket Hotel where he was staying in the city of Dukem, outside the capital of Addis Ababa, and allegedly headed to the ethnic-Ken border to cross the border with Kenya, according to the state-run media of the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC) Federal State Prosecutor. The suspects are present in court today.
Videos posted on the EBC showed that Iared was handcuffed and was driven to a safety car. He shook his head to avoid the camera.
In related developments, the head of the Ethi-Telecom Security Department, State Telecommunications Corporation, Colonel Gudet Olan was arrested.
He faces charges of interfering with the work of the federal prosecution in what appears to be an attempt to conceal the investigation of corruption crimes in a military conglomerate, METEC.
The number of former state officials who have been arrested in connection with corruption and human rights violations is now over sixty, according to reports by the Federal State Prosecutor's Office.
