The government authorizes two controversial wind farms

Two wind farm projects in the underground cause fears for biodiversity and critique of fishermen.

The challenge did not give up the executive. On Tuesday, the government gave this green light to the operation of two wind farms on the mainland, one located on the islands of Ieu and Noirmoutier (Vendee) and the other on the Seine-Maritime, in the declarations published in the Official Journal.

These permits cease to "produce an effect" if installations are not put into service in their "completeness" on July 1, 2024, adding two orders.

Fear for biodiversity

The Noirmoutier project, which has been developing for four years now and which consists of 62 wind farms, comes against opponents who are afraid of biodiversity. In a public survey between April and May 2018, 76% of those who spoke spoke their opposition to the project.

The project, developed by Engie, is expected to produce an average of 1,900 gigawatt hours (GVh) of electricity annually. This corresponds to an annual consumption of 790 000 people, which is more than the population of Vendee (674 000).

Electricity for two thirds of Seine-Maritime

The Dieppe Le Treport project must also bring together 62 wind turbines. Park, developed by Engie, produces an average of 2,000 GWh per year, which represents an annual electricity consumption of about 850,000 people, or about two-thirds of the Seine-Maritime population.

Backed by the Regional Council of Normandy, chaired by Herve Morin centered, it also provoked strong criticism from local fishermen, supported by the PCF of the municipalities of Dieppe and Treport. A public inquiry into the project opened in mid-October and should be completed by the end of November.
