Scientists in FORTH for the first time participate in the biomedical program – SKAI (vvv.skai.gr)

Scientists from the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Institute of Technology and Research (FORTH), will participate in a research program to study how the lack of gravity in the area affects the muscular system and physical state of the body.

For the first time, the Greek Research Institute will participate in an international biomedical study to be held at the International Space Station (ISS). Scientists from the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Institute of Technology and Research (FORTH), will participate in a research program to study how the lack of gravity in the area affects the muscular system and physical state of the body.

In international research, it is coordinated by dr. Dr. Nektarios Tavernarakis, President of HEI, Research Director at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, and professor at the Medical School of the University of Crete. Scientists from Japan, USA and South Korea also take part.

Scientists will study the biological effects of long-lasting space to answer questions like: How are the tissues and cells of the organism affected after long-term exposure to microbial conditions? How does the lack of gravity affect the muscular and neuronal morphology and function? What mechanisms are responsible for the loss of muscle mass observed in the astronauts after a long stay in space? What is the impact of the lack of gravity and cosmic radiation on the aging process?

The mission of the biological material to the International Space Station will be scheduled for the American Space Center Kennedy on November 18. Caenorhabditis elegans samples travel in special bags containing oxygen at the space station where they will remain reproduced. Resistant larvae will be frozen at a minus 80 degrees Celsius, and then begin a journey back to Earth to study the researchers that the changes that will in the meantime suffer in their nervous and muscular system.

It is expected that the study of the effects of space conditions on this organism will provide important information and answers to scientists about the long-term stay of human space.
