India without runners Ravichandran Ashvin became the fastest Indian bowler with 400 trial wickets on Thursday. Ashwin, playing his 77th test, was on 397 tickets at the end of England’s first inning during the current third test and fired English strikers Ben Stokes, Ollie Pope and Jofra Archer in the second inning to reach a milestone. Ashvin is only behind Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan on the list of fastest players up to 400 wickets in the Tests. Muralitharan got there in just 72 matches. Other Indians who have chosen more than 400 goalkeepers are Anil Kumble (619), Kapil Dev (434) and Harbhajan Singh (417).

Ashvin opened his account in the second inning by capturing Stokes lbv and then followed him with bowling by Ollie Pope.

The 400th goalkeeper was Jofra Archer, who missed an expansive shot when the ball hit him low on the ground. India appealed and the field judge betrayed him.

Ashvin’s moment was briefly interrupted as Archer reconsidered the decision only to have the DRS return the three reds and complete a well-deserved feat for the Indian prime minister on the spinner.

Ashwin picked three wickets during the first inning in England, where visitors were honored for 112.

The 34-year-old has been in good form with both the bat and the ball in this series, has so far picked up 23 goalkeepers in the series and scored 176 runs, including one century in the second inning of the second test.

He became the fourth largest trophy player for India in international cricket on the 1st day of the third test as he passed the Zaheer Khan sum of 597 pawns.

In addition to 400 trial wickets, Ashvin has 150 wickets in ODIs and 52 in T20Is since his international debut in 2010.
