Best overall: Samsung Galaxy Tab S7

Andi Bokall / Digital Trends

Why should you buy this? The Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 is the king of hardware, with superior processing power, a beautiful screen and Samsung’s S Pen.

Who is it for Everyone who wants the best of the best – and has the money to spend it.

Why we chose Samsung Galaxy Tab S7:

The Galaxy Tab S7 is the best Android tablet you can get right now. The device has an absolutely stunning screen, whether you have an 11-inch model or a larger Galaxy Tab S7 + of 12.4 inches. The 11-inch LCD screen of the model is already nice enough, but the S7 + replaces it with an OLED screen, so it’s even better. The tablet also supports HDR.

Under the hood, the tablet does not tilt. It offers a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor, which is the same chip that runs Samsung’s Galaxy S20, and 6 GB or 8 GB of RAM is more than enough to sustain this tablet. It comes with 128GB, 256GB or 512GB of internal storage, but can be expanded via a MicroSD card if you want to download a lot of stuff.

Even the speakers are pretty good, and there are four around the edge of the device. The 13-megapixel and 5-megapixel main camera, facing backwards, is capable of capturing 4K video at 30 frames per second, while the 8-megapixel front camera is good enough for selfies and video chat. All this is powered by an 8000mAh battery, which can be charged quickly if you buy a 45V charger separately. And the included S pen works smoothly and naturally.

The software experience is pretty good for an Android tablet. Although Android app developers haven’t traditionally actually developed their own big-screen apps, Samsung is somewhat circumventing this with the Samsung DeX desktop interface.

The downside here is the high price – if you’re primarily for a laptop, then the Samsung Chromebook Pro or Microsoft’s Surface Go are both cheaper and may suit you better.

If you want the best Android tablet experience, Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 is a good choice. It’s a solid step over Tab A 8.0, but that high price can give you a break.

Best mid-range Android tablet: Samsung Galaxy Tab A7

Why should you buy this? This tablet still offers superior processing, with a modern design and even more – plus it comes at a much lower price than the Galaxy Tab S7.

Who is it for Anyone who wants a decent tablet to browse websites, social networks, etc., without having to spend a ton of cash.

Why we chose Samsung Galaxy Tab A7:

If the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 is a little too expensive, you may be tempted by the more affordable Galaxy Tab A7. It boasts a great 10.4-inch LCD screen, which makes it great for watching movies or TV shows. It is light and thin, with a fingerprint sensor on the side instead of on the screen.

The big difference is inside, where the Tab A7 relies on a mid-range Snapdragon 662 processor and 3GB of RAM. It comes in two variants, with 32 GB or 64 GB of storage space. There is also space for a MicroSD card. It also has a 7,040mAh battery, and there is also a main camera with one lens, 8 megapixels and a front camera of 5 megapixels. You won’t find support for the S Pen here, but it works with Samsung’s Dex desktop mode.

To browse the web, watch movies, and play optional games, Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 will mark all your boxes.

Best Android tablet: Amazon Fire HD 10

Amazon Fire HD 10 Prime Video
Julian Chokkattu / Digital Trends

Why should you buy this? The Amazon Fire HD 10 has a nice big screen, with enough processing power for most, and works great in Amazon’s ecosystem.

Who is it for Anyone who just wants a big screen for basic video streaming and social media.

Why we chose Amazon Fire HD 10:

Amazon Fire HD 10 is the most affordable tablet on our list. Amazon has refreshed it this year with a new processor, bigger battery, USB-C port and an improved front camera, the newer Fire HD 10 is an even bigger offer. It has a decent screen with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels and stereo speakers with Dolby Audio support, which makes it a good device for watching movies on the go. Fire HD 10 also has dual-band Wi-Fi, so you can connect to the 2.5 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi bands for fast download speeds. The tablet has a quad-core processor and 2 GB of RAM. It is not yet a demon of speed, but it offers appropriate performance considering the price.

You can buy Amazon Fire HD 10 with 32 GB or 64 GB of storage space, but also supports MicroSD cards. It should last up to 12 hours on a single charge, which is good. This tablet runs Amazon’s Fire OS – an Android-based operating system – so all future software and security updates will come from Amazon. Aleka is built-in for voice commands without the use of hands, but as it is not a traditional Android tablet, there is no Google Play store – you have to download applications directly from Amazon app store. If you’re happy with the smaller screen and more limited specs, then Amazon Fire HD 8 is the right price for $ 80.

Best Android small screen tablet: Amazon Fire HD 8

Amazon Fire HD 8
Amazon Fire HD 8 (2020)

Why should you buy this? Amazon Fire HD 8 offers all the same features that Fire HD 10 offers, but in a smaller, portable package.

Who is it for Anyone who wants the cheapest Android tablet out there is also portable enough to travel.

Why we chose Amazon Fire HD 8:

Amazon Fire HD 8 (2020) is a refresh of the 2018 model and does not bring much new to the table. It offers a USB-C port and a faster processor, but the real advantage of this is that it is extremely cheap and offers a small and portable design. The screen has a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels and although it is not the sharpest, it is definitely good enough for watching movies.

Fire HD 8 is also available in a number of different colors, and around it you will get Dolby Atmos speakers that provide decent sound quality. And, as you’d expect, the tablet integrates deeply with Amazon services, such as Amazon Prime Music and Prime Video. Aleka also works pretty well on the device.

And the battery life is impressive. You get up to 12 hours of mixed use, which can include reading, playing and streaming. Fire OS software Fire Fire 8, a custom version of Android, is not for everyone. But people immersed in Amazon’s ecosystem will appreciate the For You interface, a referral mechanism that puts videos, apps, games, and movies from the vendor’s library on the home screen.

You won’t find the perfect tablet for less than $ 100, but Fire HD 8 is a solid package. Of course, the screen is not as sharp or vivid as we would like, and the hardware struggles under a heavy load, but there is no better tablet at this price.

Who is it for Anyone who wants a solid tablet for their children that allows them to keep track of what they are doing on the device.

Why we chose Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Edition:

The 2020 Fire HD 8 it is also available in the children’s edition and is probably the best tablet for those who want something to entertain and educate their children. It has an 8-inch screen with a resolution of 1280 x 800, provides bright and vivid colors, along with 32 GB of internal memory. It is perfect for storing books, games and other media. There is also a MicroSD card.

As you might expect, there is also a solid selection of parental controls. Fire OS is an operating system under the hood and it is a customized version of Android that in this case allows you to set educational goals and restrict access to content that is not appropriate. It also has a parental dashboard that offers insight into what your kids are doing on their tablets.

With the tablet there are also a few cute free free movies. You get a free year of Amazon’s FreeTime Unlimited, a library of over 15,000 games, apps, books and videos for kids. Each purchase is backed by Amazon’s two-year replacement policy without asking the question: If the Fire HD 8 breaks down, Amazon will replace it.

Simply put, there is no better tablet at this price for young children who still need parental supervision.

If you want something bigger than Fire HD 8 Kids Edition, there’s also Fire HD 10 Kids Edition which has a larger screen, higher processing power and a USB-C charging port, but costs $ 200. Read our review of the Fire HD 10 Kids Edition to learn more about Amazon’s larger offering.
