Organic products are growing all over the world

There is a good prospect for the international organic food industry – in Europe and around the world. European and international markets remain on the path of growth. Experts are currently placing global revenues above $ 95 billion; Europe makes more than 33 billion euros. The market is now developing strongly in many European countries: Germany has exceeded 10 billion euros, and the French market has doubled in five years, and Denmark has expanded its role with a market share of 13.3 percent for organic food, which makes it an organic leader in Europe. Excellent signs, then, for BioFach, a gathering place for the organic sector in the world and the world's leading organic food fair, which will be held from 13 to 16 February 2019. Over 2,900 exhibitors and more than 50,000 visitors are expected at the exhibition center in Nuremberg.

"Global organic food revenues remain at a distance, with initial estimates putting them at more than $ 95 billion for 2017," said Amarjit Sahota of the London Research and Consulting Firm Ecovia (formerly an organic monitor). And he adds, "We see growth in North America and Europe, but the Asian market is also coming soon."

Europe is the second-largest organic product market after North America. Organic organic revenues rose 11.4 percent in 2016 to € 33.5 billion, according to data presented jointly by BIOFACH 2018 by IFOAM – Organics International, the Swiss Research Institute for Organic Agriculture (FiBL) and Agrarmark Informations -Gesellschaft (AMI) headquarters in Berlin.

Germany: Organic revenues exceed 10 billion euros German organic sector earns over 10.04 billion euros in 2017 revenue The most represented country in Europe once again recorded the largest single digit of sales in absolute value, followed by France. Revenue from the previous year was 5.9 percent. Conventional retail food sales rose above average 8.8 percent. Retail trade in natural food, which has a market share of 29%, increased by 2.2%. The total area dedicated to organic farming in Germany in 2017 was about 1.4 million hectares, which is 10 percent more than in the previous year. This means that currently 8.2% of the agricultural land used is organically processed.

France: The market is doubling in five years The French organic food market has been on an unbroken path of growth for years. According to the agency Agence Bio, the profit from 2017 is 17 percent and reached 8.3 billion euros (including institutional food service). This encourages more and more farmers to turn into organic methods. The curve has been sharply stressed since 2014, so recently, including newly emerging fields, 1.78 million hectares under cultivation that is incompatible with environmental protection.

Moreover, organic production proved to be the real engine for the job. Between 2012 and 2017, organic production and further processing created about 50,000 new jobs. This is equivalent to an annual gain of 9.5%. The total number of jobs in the organic industry in France, agriculture and processing (excluding retail), at the end of the year was 134,500. So, one of the eight jobs in the agricultural sector is now organic. For comparison: in Germany the number one on every ten.

Denmark: Growth carries seven boots for the league. Denmark expanded its leadership over all other countries in the world in 2017, adding 23 percent of revenue to achieve a fantastic market share of 13.3 percent – well ahead of Germany (5.4 percent) and France (4.2 percent) and about nine times more than the number for the UK. This is a great success not only for consistent government policies that have been in place for a firm three decades, but for all those involved in the market. Danes are the most popular organic rolled teeth. Only they have a market share of 52 percent, followed by carrots (42 percent), eggs (33 percent) and milk (32 percent). Revenues in 2017 increased by 31% to an equivalent of 1.6 billion euros – for the first time they include online sales. This is beside an additional 322 million euros in Danish organic exports of milk and dairy products, eggs, meat products, fruits, vegetables and other products.

United Kingdom: Growth from the Low Base The economic and financial crisis 2008 has temporarily slowed growth in the organic market in the UK. Now the market has returned to boost growth rates. Segment growth in 2017 was 6 percent, and organic revenue amounted to 2.5 billion euros.

Belgium: Healthy growth of the market stimulates organic production Consumption of organic food was 6 percent in 2017. Organic agriculture gained vigorous demand and rose by 8.8 percent in the same period, an increase of about 83,000 hectares. The share of organic on the market of general food products in Belgium has doubled since 2008 and now stands at 3.4%.

Netherlands: Steady growth brings success "Organic revenues in the Netherlands recorded a barrier of 1.5 billion euros for the first time last year," said Bavo Van den Idsert, a joint publisher of Bionect Trendreport 2017, which publishes current figures for the organic industry. The previous year's profit was 5 percent, primarily due to the segment of fresh food. The area dedicated to organic agriculture has expanded to 7% in the Netherlands; the number of organic farmers increased by 10 percent, the report said.

The lion's share of revenues in the organic sector, with 51.5 percent, was realized in conventional retail, followed by a specialty retailer with 21.5 percent. Institutional food service was 20%, and 7% came from other market channels. According to the organic organization for monitoring SKAL, the area under organic cultivation has reached almost 70,000 hectares.

Italy: Growth of the broader front At rising growth rates of around 18% in the last three years, the profit of Italy's revenue for 2017 was still 10.5%. Retail revenues, according to the Italian research and consulting firm Nomisma, reached 3.5 billion euros, including 415 million euros of institutional food service. Organic exports are also very significant in Italy, reaching 2 billion euros in 2017. The field area also recorded a gain of 6.3 percent; 1.9 million hectares is under organic cultivation. Thus, Italy ranks number 2 in Europe, after Spain, in an area under organic cultivation, on more than 2 million hectares. According to the Italian Ministry of Agriculture, the number of organic farmers was 66,773, an increase of 4%.

Austria and Switzerland: Organic Still Rising Italian Neighbors Austria and Switzerland also see a steady swing in demand for organic organs. According to the Austrian marketing agency AMA, the sales of organic food products in Austria amounted to about 1.8 billion euros in 2017. This is a 12 percent increase from 2016. Three quarters of all organic products sell conventional food traders, 18 percent of specialized retailers or directly to organic farms, and 6 percent of food services. Organic products account for 8.6 percent of total retail food. Austria has more than 23,000 organic farmers.

Sales of organic products rose by 8% in Switzerland to 2.3 billion euros. Market share rose from 8.4 to 9 percent. According to the Bio-Suisse media office, market shareholders were eggs, with 27% and vegetables, from 23%. The highest-selling sellers were milk products and cheese. The number of organic operations has risen to around 6,900 (Switzerland and Liechtenstein together). The organic surface of the land has grown to 14.4 percent.

Poland: Specialist retailers are expanding to larger sales floors "The Polish organic food market is growing and consumers are looking for a wider range of products," explains Polish organic expert Karol Przibilak, a publisher of the Bio-Kurier magazine. Industry observers estimate the market at around 250 million euros. However, the sector also faces challenges. BioFamili is a new retail player on the market, opening three stores with over 100 m² of sales space. Poland has about 800 specialty food stores that serve interested consumers all over the country. Organic Farm Zdrovia, with 32 shops in twelve cities in Poland, is the largest organic seller among the specialists. Conventional retailers offer more and more organic products, and there are traders like Biedronka and Lidl to play a bigger role. According to experts, in 2017 Poland had 795 organic food producers and 15,740 organic farms.
