PETALING JAIA: Sied Saddik Abdul Rahman has hit the Penang government over the purchase of a new Mercedes-Benz S560e for Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeov.
“It is not necessary to buy a luxury car using people’s money when hundreds of thousands lost their jobs during the Covid-19 season, and thousands were affected by bad floods,” said the former Minister of Youth and Sports.
“We have to be honest!” he said in a Facebook post on Thursday (January 7th) evening.
He said as the opposition that they had previously criticized the management of Kelantan PAS for getting new Mercedes-Benz cars for official use as well as increasing earnings with a backlog during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“It’s the same now,” he added.
Penang Secretary of State Datuk Abdul Razak Jaafar, in a statement on Thursday (January 7th), confirmed that the Mercedes S560e was purchased at a price of 458,000 RM to replace Chow with his previous official car, the Mercedes S300L.
In 2014, when then-Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng received a Mercedes-Benz S300L as an official car, he was criticized by politicians Barisan Nacional and DAP partners Pakatan Rakiat.
The car was obtained to replace Lim’s 18-year-old official car, the Mercedes-Benz S320.
Last November, the Kelantan government was criticized for buying 14 Mercedes-Benz cars for use by mentri besar and members of the state executive council.
