From now on, there is a new website for people who need mental protection. Website Choose in mental protection should help patients and physicians find psychiatrists, psychologists and other therapists without a waiting list.
Choose in mental protection Provides information on waiting times for the provider and under conditions, such as autism or depression. "With this website, it's easier to find a supplier that has a place," says Marjan and Avest. She is director of the patient organization MIND, who, along with the health sector and the Ministry of Health, Social Protection and Sports, took the initiative for this site.
State Secretary Blokhuis expects shorter waiting lists to protect mental health through the site. He says the Dutch health service (NZA) will force GGZ providers to transmit current waiting times.
More than half a year
According to the WHO and the Inspectorate for Health Care and Youth, waiting lists for autism, trauma treatment and personality disorders are too long. Patients often have to wait months, and sometimes even more than half a year before the start of treatment.
According to the patient's organization MIND, doctors often refer to the same psychiatrist or psychologist. "The sector is complex, and GP appoint someone who they know and trust," says Ter-Avest. Choose in mental protection GPs should point to other practitioners in the neighborhood with shorter or no waiting times.
However, transparency is not the only solution for the patient organization. "Urgency is still as high as possible in order to reduce the long waiting time in certain regions to an acceptable level."
