The National University (NU) will not play in the final quarter, but Bulldogs managed to finish their campaign with a positive note after the University of East (UE), 79-71, at the 81st UAAP Basketball Tournament at Mall Asia Arena in Pasai.

Troy Rick, who scored slightly more than five points per game, scored 17 points on the bench and grabbed 13 rebounds, while Senegal Center Issa Gaie took 12 points for the NF, which ended a double elimination with a 4-10 record under coach Mike Jarin.

This marked the third season of the season that Bulldogs missed the semifinals, or since the 78th season in 2015, when the NU – as the fourth team team – lost at the Santo Tomas University in the Final Four.

Two out of four Bulldogs' victories came at the expense of Warriors who tripled, 88-61, in the first round on October 13th.

UE finished the season with a record 13-13 after the first coach Joe Silva. Their personal victory came against Dalar University Tamaravs, 90-65, last September.

The UE is again from the final quarter nine times. The last time UE was in the semifinals was in 2009, when he did it all the way to the finals, but he lost to Atene, 2-1, in the final of the three series finals.

Shaun Ildedonso and Dave Iu scored six points after the Bulldogs led Warriors, 21-17, after the first 10 minutes of the game. The Gaie bumper led the Bulldogs to lead 27-17, and he remained in the second quarter.

UE gathered behind Pasaol's five straight points – spacing and shooting with three points – which reduced the deficit to 27-22.

However, Gaia's three-point game and the troika that hit Troy Rike again once again said 10 points, 32-22, while in the second period there were 5:41. Mohamed Salim defeated the bouncer who gave the NU a 44-32 advantage at half-time.

Despite another rebuke by UE, Alvin Pasaol has already made a history with an average of 24.69 points per game – most for the local since 2003, when the then FEU star Terrence Romeo averaged 22.2 points in the game 2013 year.

Pasaol, who finished with 20 points, missed out to beat former De La Salle Ben Mbalu 24.9 points after an average game last season.

The result:
NU 79 – Rike 17, Gaia 12, Ildefonso D. 9, Ildefonso S. 9, Akuino 7, Ju 6, Salim 6, Diputado 5, Galinato 4, Clemente 2, Tibaian 2, Morido 0, Joson 0, Malonzo 0.

UE 71 – Pasaol 20, Conner 19, Acuno 11, Varila 10, Manalang 7, Bartolome 2, Guion 2, Kullar 0, Maloles 0, Gallardo 0, Strait 0.

Neighbor: 21-17, 44-32, 58-46, 79-71.
