Oxford University scientists have developed a new way to fight cancer. The Enadenotucirus virus, modified by scientists, has already demonstrated efficacy in laboratory experiments on colorectal cancer and healthy bone marrow tissue, as well as in successful tests in mice.
The main advantage of the new treatment is the absence of adverse effects. Due to the modification of the genome, the virus infects only the malignant cells. As you know, for the protection of healthy fibroblasts, the body inhibits the activity of T-lymphocytes within the tumor. However, the virus causes cancer cells to produce a bispecific T-cell agent that activates T-lymphocytes within the tumor. So, a new approach from Oxford scientists allows you to destroy malignant cells without affecting healthy ones.
Developing and testing new methods is not a quick process. In the past few years, scientists have achieved considerable success, but they still face many problems that need to be solved. It is worth noting that there is currently a tendency to increase the number of people suffering from oncological diseases. According to the World Health Organization, over the past 10 years, an increase in incidence of cancer has been on average 15%.
