Recently, a research group led by prof. Yuan Kaijun and prof. Yang Xueming of the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics (DICP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences discovered strong isotopic effects in the photodissociation of water isotopologists (HOD) using the Dalian Coherent Light Source.
Their findings were published in Scientific progress July 23.
“Our experimental results illustrate dramatically different distributions of the population of OH and OD fragments of OH and OD from HOD photodissociation. Branching relationships of H+OD and D.+OH channels show a large isotopic fraction depending on the wavelength “, said prof. Yuan.
Since water is one of the most abundant species in the solar nebula, photodissociation of water and its isotopologist using solar vacuum ultraviolet photons may be an alternative source of D / H isotope heterogeneity, and this effect must be considered in photochemical models.
The photochemical processes identified in this paper can alter the ratio of D / H isotopes in the interior and exterior and / or in different periods of the solar nebula, which can cause heterogeneity of D / H isotopes in the solar system.
