NASA's OSIRIS-REk spacecraft carried out the fourth Maneuver Asteroid Approach (AAM-4) yesterday. The spacecraft fired its Attitude Control System (ACS) propulsion systems to lower the spacecraft from about 0.31 mph (0.14 m / s) to 0.10 miles per hour (0.04 m / s).
ACS thrusters are capable of changing speeds lower than 0.02 mph (0.01 m / s).
The mission team will continue to test telemetry and monitor data over the next week to confirm the new route. The maneuver has directed the spacecraft to fly through a corridor that is designed to collect high resolution images that will be used to build the Bennu model.
With the AAM-4 execution, the OSIRIS-REk spacecraft completes six weeks of Bennu's series of maneuvers. AAM-1 and AAM-2, carried out on October 1 and October 15, slowed down the spacecraft by about 1.088 mph (486 m / s).
The AAM-3 and AAM-3A, which were made on October 29 and November 5, further improved the speed and space of the spacecraft to set the conditions for a successful AAM-4 maneuver.
After the final correction maneuver scheduled for November 30, a spacecraft will be on its way to reach 12 miles (20 km) from Bennu on December 3rd.
