ESA / Roscosmos spacecraft sends its first photos on the surface of Mars

Orbiter is in charge of testing methane sources on Mars, which may or may not be a product of biological activity on the red planet.

European space agency / Roscosmos jointly developed space ship Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) has returned its first photos of the surface of Mars. Among the photos taken by the space-based color and stereo system (CaSSIS), images of NASA's InSight lander, the Columbian crater, and the strange "hairy" structure of almost biological appearance.

This is the first time a European space ship has captured NASA, Science Alert said. A space ship, a heat shield and a parachute can be seen as small points on the surface of the planet. The landing engine landing marks are seen as a larger patch.

Earlier, NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter – which arrived on the red planet in 2018 – returned the images of the lander, according to a statement from the University of Bern.

Another stunning picture is the strange structure of the hairy appearance that appears as a suggestive biological form. NASA scientists believe that this structure can be "hundreds or even thousands of smaller Martian tornadoes", also known as "devils of dust". The image is shown in a false color for better contrast.

"In real color, the streaks would be dark red," the statement said.

The TGO, developed by Russian Roscosmos and the European Space Agency, is part of the EcoMars program, which is responsible for finding and investigating the sources of methane and water vapor, which is said to exist in the atmosphere of Mars.

The presence of methane may indicate biological or seismological activity. If traces of methane were discovered along with propane or ethane, this would mean that life once existed on Mars. However, if methane is found to occur together with sulfur dioxide, this would indicate geological activity.
